Dr. Hughie Hughes died Tuesday, August 12, 2008.
Dr. Hughie Hughes was born in Whiting, Iowa, August 21, 1922, and passed away on August 12, 2008. He grew up in Decatur, Nebraska and attended Dana College in Blair, Nebraska and graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Hughie was a veteran of World War II serving his country in the Armored Infantry in Europe. He was the Superintendent of schools in Irwin, Iowa, from 1952 – 1956. After receiving his Ph.D., degree he taught at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The family moved to Metairie, Louisiana, in 1967 when Hughie took the position of Associate Professor at the University of New Orleans. He retired in 1985 and moved to Hide-A-Way Lake in Carriere, Mississippi. Hughie is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Gladys Lynge Hughes, and his two children Charles and Bonnie and his Daughter-In-Law Hilda. He leaves four grandchildren, Martin, Eric, Lauren and Gretchen and one brother, Shirley and his wife Jeanette from Dakota City, Nebraska, plus many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one infant son, Douglas, his parents Harry and Calva Hughes, his brothers, Bob and Harold, and sisters, Mabel and Joyce. During his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf at Millbrook Country Club and performing and working for Picayune On Stage. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Picayune, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Phi Delta Kappa and a lifetime member of the National Education Association. . | |
